DR. KANG INAUGURATES PAU ATHLETIC MEET, INSPIRES STUDENTS TO EXCEL ON EVERY FRONT

LUDHIANA,

The Directorate of Students Welfare of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) organized its 45th Annual Athletic Meet today at PAU Athletic track. PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang inaugurated the meet. In his remarks, Dr Kang said that PAU believes in excellence in sports, curricular and extra curricular activities. He added that the University has produced renowned sportspersons and that to honour the three Olympians namely, Mr Pirthipal Singh, Mr Charanjit Singh and Mr Ramandip Singh, it has produced, the University has named the road from Library to the Gymnasium as \'Olympian Marg\'. \' I am in the Olympian spirit today\' said Dr Kang while opening the Athletic Meet. Dr. Kang said that many laurels were brought during the successful commonwealth games. He inspired the students to always strive for excellence and to bring laurels for the University and the country. He wished the sportsperson good luck and unfurled the University flag amidst showering of petals and release of colourful balloons. Dr. Kang took salute from the sports contingents of different colleges. Ms Harmeet Kaur, a Ph. D student took oath. Dr. Kang released a souvenir brought out for the occasion.

Dr P.S.Aulakh, Director Students' Welfare, PAU, while welcoming the Chief Guest, other dignitaries , students and employees said that the sports events for both men and women, that were scheduled for the event included 100 M Heat, 200 M Heat, hammer throw, 110 M Hurdle, triple jump, javelin throw, 400 M Hurdle, 1500 M and 5000 M, 1500 M, 800 M, shot put, broad jump, 400 M Heat, high jumps, 100 M, discuss throw, 400 M, 4X 100 relay, 200 M and 4X400 M relay.

In the athletic meet, Dr. Bikram Gill, distinguished Professor from Kansas State University, USA, was honoured. For their excellent performance in their field of activity and in sports Dr. Parminder Singh Sidhu, Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt and Dr. Baldev Singh Sohal were honoured for their contribution in hockey, athletics and football, respectively. The closing ceremony took place in the afternoon.

Dr. Nirmal Jaura, Deputy Director (PR) informed that Satnam Kaur of College of Agriculture was declared the best athlete (W) while Raj Kamal Singh Dhillon best athlete (M). The second and third best athletes positions went to Gauravdeep Singh (College of Agricultural Engineering and Ramandeep Singh, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, respectively. Best march past contingent was of College of Home Science. The overall best performance in men and women category went to College of Agriculture.

In men section, Gurpreet Singh, Periwinkle Grewal and Jaskirat Singh (all from College of Agriculture) got first, second and third position in hammer throw. Gauravdeep Singh, Raj Kamal Dhillon and Manohardeep Singh (all from College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology) got first, second and third position in 100 m hurdles. In triple jump first three positions went to Rajkamal Singh, Azadwinder and Manohardeep Singh. The first two positions in 400 m hurdle were won by Gauravdeep Singh and Gurpreet Singh (both College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology. In javelin throw, Periwinkle (COA), Ramandeep (COBS&H) and Jaskirat (COA) got first, second and third position, respectively. In 1500 m event Anjum Singh (COA) got the first position while in short put, broad jump, 100 m, high jump, discuss throw, 400 m events it was captured by Gaganpreet Singh (COBS&H), Rajkamal Singh Dhillon, Taranjit Singh, Rajkamal Dhillon, Periwinkle Grewal, and Gauravdeep Singh, respectively.

In 4x100 m relay, the first position was captured by COA (Arjun Singh, Taranjit Singh, Barinderpal Singh and Satinder Singh) while second and third position went to COA&T (Gurpreet Singh, Azadwinder Singh, Rajkamal Singh and Gauravdeep Singh) and Institute of Agriculture, Gurdaspur (Sukhcharan Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Sarwan Singh and Akashdeep Singh). In 800 m and 200 m events Gurwinder Singh (COA) and Taranjit Singh (COA) got the first position, respectively. In 5000 m event Simran Singh, Iksat Singh and Shaukat Ali of COA got first, second and third position, respectively.

In the women section Shivani Sharda (COA), Vasuda Sharma (COA&T), Harmit Kaur (COA), Vasuda Sharma (COAE&T), Shivani Sharda (COA), Satnam Kaur (COA), Pratibha Chaudhary (COA), Harmit Kaur (COA), Satnam Kaur (COA), Vasuda Sharma (COA&T) and Sakshi Arora (COAE&T) got first position in Javelin throw, 800 m, shot put, high jump, 100 m, 400 m, 4x100 m relay, discuss throw, 200 m, broad jump and 1500 m events, respectively.

Dr Kang and Dr. Gill delivered various prizes and certificates to the winners. Present on the occasion were Deans, Directors, Officers, faculty members, employees, students and sports enthusiasts. Dr. P.P.S.Lubana,
