DOING ORDINARY THINGS IN EXTRA ORDINARY MANNER PAVES WAY TO SUCCESS: DR. KANG

LUDHIANA,

An orientation programme for newly admitted Ph.D students at PAU was held in the Farmers Service Center, today in which departmental Heads, Chairmen Teaching Committees, senior faculty members and Ph. D students participated. The programme was organized by Dean, Postgraduate Studies (Dean, PGS) under the aegis of PAU Science Club. Dr. Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, PAU was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

In his remarks, Dr. Kang said that PAU is a great name among State Agricultural Universities in India and has a creditable visibility internationally. It has done commendably well in transforming the food deficit state to the food surplus one. He welcomed the newly admitted Ph. D students to PAU which is a torch bearer as far as quality and innovation of agricultural research, education and technology transfer programmes are concerned. Dr. Kang said that the distinctions with which PAU has performed over the years has branded it as an excellent institute. He highlighted that due to these reasons PAU has fetched several national and international awards including the best institute award of ICAR, first International Potash Institute (Switzerland) and Fertilizer Association of India (IPI-FAI) award for transfer of technology, center government\'s award of rupees 100 crore for excellence in basic and strategic research in agriculture, etc. Dr. Kang announced that PAU has been short listed for a best Agricultural University by M/s Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. He said that many reputed international organizations are seeking collaboration with PAU. Congratulating the participating students, he said that the future holds enormous opportunities for them.

Elaborating the postgraduate educational programmes, Dean, PGS, Dr. Gursharan Singh highlighted the strengths of PAU that include accredited laboratories, competent scientific man power, enough infrastructure and added that there were 94 Ph. D students admitted to PAU that include 11 in service candidates. He informed that PAU has made several innovations in terms of revising course curricula that include courses in need based areas of intellectual property right, bio-diversity, bio-safety, etc. and reprioritizing agenda for postgraduate research. Dr. Singh said that there were many fellowships available for the postgraduate students. \'Intellectual Capital has a direct bearing on economic progress of the country\', said Dr. Singh adding that efforts are being made to enhance quality of PG programmes through an improvised system of monitoring, talent hunt and retention, etc.

Earlier, Mr. Sanjiv Kumar presented an overview of the online access to resource material at the PAU Library. He elaborated on the J-gate service for online journals, consortium for e-resources in agriculture (CeRA), krishi prabha for full text doctoral dissertations access and e-books. The newly admitted Ph. D students introduced themselves indicating why they were attracted to seek admission at PAU.
