26/11 martyr\'s kin fights for life after protest

Feb 5, 2011,NEW DELHI:

It is grievous blow to the Unnikrishnans who lost their only son in the Mumbai terror attack. The martyr\'s uncle, K Mohanan, who set himself ablaze at Vijay Chowk on Thursday to protest against government\'s apathy towards victims of the terror attack, has received 95% burn injuries. Doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where he is admitted, said his condition is critical.

The patient\'s brother K Unnikrishnan and his wife - parents of the 26/11 Mumbai attack martyr major Sandeep Unnikrishnan - arrived in New Delhi on Friday. \"We got to know about the self-immolation bid from news channels. Mohanan did not contact us or anyone in the family before the incident. He left from Kozhikode on January 30 for business-related work,\" said K Unnikrishnan. He said Mohanan\'s condition is serious. \"We saw him today. He has been put on ventilator. Doctors said he had a cardiac arrest in the morning,\" Unnikrishnan added.

Mohanan, who was close to Sandeep, committed suicide due to anger and frustration.

According to the martyr\'s father, his brother was carrying a letter addressed to Sandeep, his own family and the government. \"He was not depressed or ill but frustrated with the system,\" said the bereaved brother.

Police sources said the letters written in Malayalam blamed the government for its failure in prosecuting the perpetrators of the terror attack. \"Why is the government late in introducing a bill in the Parliament against terrorism? Democracy should be for the well-being of the nation, and it should not make way for terrorism,\" the letter said. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was the team commander of 51 SAG deployed in the operation at the Taj Mahal Hotel to flush out the terrorists from the building and rescue the hostages.

But Unnikrishnan said what Mohanan has written is his personal opinion and they have nothing to do with it.

According to police, Mohanan, 56, a native of Kozhikode in Kerala poured kerosene on his body and set himself on fire outside Gate Number 4 of Parliament House near Vijay Chowk around 6pm on Thursday.

People at the spot tried to douse the fire and informed police after which he was taken to the hospital. Police recovered a train ticket and notebook from Mohanan\'s possession.
