Police work overtime after getting more intel tip-offs

MUMBAI: Even as the police worked overtime on Saturday, trying to trace the four suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba members who had recently sneaked into the city on a terror mission, they were tipped off by intelligence agencies about Indian Mujahideen cadres who were planning an attack on a well-known five-star hotel in south Mumbai. Moreover, the men in khaki—incidentally, their weekly-offs and leaves have been cancelled till December 31 for the additional security—were also flooded with reports that some terrorists had entered Gujarat and the same gang could even target Mumbai.

After the intelligence agencies sent an input to the police about a possible strike by IM cadres on the five-star hotel, extra safety measures were implemented around it. \"We have asked the hotel to be alert and have deployed more policemen there,\" We don\'t want to take any chances,\" an official said. A source in the security establishment added that they suspected that the IM was helping LeT to carry out attacks in India. But none of the recent suspects recently linked to the Mumbai plots could be arrested yet.

On December 23, the Mumbai police received inputs from the Assam Special Police that four terrorists had sneaked into Mumbai and were planning major attacks during the festive season of the Christmas and New Year. The police have identified the four as Abdul Karim Moosa, Noor Elahi, Waleed Jinnah and Mahfoos Alam, but could release the picture of Jinnah only.

Following up on the terror alert, the police have arranged for heavy bandobast at several localities. Quick Response Team personnel have been deployed near police headquarters and Dadar, Bandra and several other places. \"Our men are on high alert. We have not got any further information about the terrorists but are working on it,\" said crime branch chief Himanshu Checks are also being conducted on guesthouses and hotels where the suspects might be lodged. Owing to the A ban on leave and weekly offs was also announced till December 31.
