INSPIRE PROGRAMME CONCLUDES AT PAU

LUDHIANA, DECEMBER 24:-----



\'INSPIRE\' is an innovative programme to communicate to the youth the enthusiasm of creative pursuit of science and attract talent to study of science at an early state. This was stated by Dr. Manjit Singh Kang, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, who was the Chief Guest at the concluding function of the INSPIRE camp held at PAU. He said that it was a great feeling to interact with the budding scientists, especially the ones who are in their formative years. Dr. Kang said that science helps us to understand how world works. Science is indeed at the root of all productive activity, expressed he, adding that scientific temper is the mental attitude that is behind the method of acquiring reliable and practical knowledge. Science has helped mankind in innumerable ways, be it transportation, communication, power generation, agriculture, understanding natural phenomena, health care, engineering, etc., observed Dr. Kang adding that students must be encouraged to embrace science as a profession and develop scientific temper to know the reality of happenings. He distributed certificates to the students from five local schools who participated in the science camp under the INSPIRE (Innovation in science pursuits for inspired research) programme of Department of Science and Technology (DST) from December 20-24.



The Guest of Honour, Dr. S.S.Gosal, Director of Research, while addressing the gathering of students said that the programmes like INSPIRE, where experts of different disciplines interact with them, help strengthen their scientific temperament. \'There are many scientific programmes, such as B.Sc. Agri. (Hons.) four year programme, B. Sc. Biotechnology (Hons.), B. Sc. Food Technology, Integrated M. Sc. programmes (Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Bio-chemistry), B. Tech. Agricultural Engineering, B. Sc. Home Science, etc., at PAU, which the students intending to pursue scientific career can join\', said Dr. Gosal. He said that the motivation by experts will help the students to opt for science.



The programme inspired many students. Mr. Sahil, a plus one medical student at Bharti Vidya Mandir, said that the programme was extremely motivating for him. He said that he was impressed to know the expertise and facilities available at PAU. \'Be scientific to be alive\', expressed he adding that he will like to join scientific career. Ms Neetika (plus one non medical student of PAU Model Senior Secondary School) said that the INSPIRE programme proved extremely useful to her in selecting future course of study.



Dr. R.S.Sidhu, Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and organizing Coordinator of the INSPIRE programme propoed vote of thanks to the Chief Guest and all participants. More than 250 students from five city schools participated in the programme. Present on the occasion were the PAU Registrar, Dr. R.K.Mahey, Director of Research, Dr. S.S.Gosal, Dean, Postgraduate Studies, Dr. Gursharan Singh and Additional Director of Communication, Dr. Jagtar Singh Dhiman. Earlier, Dr. Baldev Singh Sohal, Coordinator, INSPIRE welcomed the Chief Guest, other dignitaries and participants. He presented a brief account of the proceedings held during the five day camp. The function was anchored by Dr. Sheetal Thapar.
