Sensex closes above 20900 led by FMCG, realty

MUMBAI: Equity benchmarks ended a volatile session in the positive territory Tuesday, as buying activity increased in FMCG realty and IT space. Banks recovered and oil&gas closed off lows.



Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex ended at 20,932.48, up 80.10 points or 0.38 per cent. The index touched a high of 20,984.08 and low of 20,762.81 in today's trade.



National Stock Exchange's Nifty closed at 6301.55, up 28.35 points or 0.45 per cent. The broader index touched intraday high of 6310.90 and low of 6243.55.



"MACD on daily chart is in Buy mode signalling downside is limited to 6220, and then 10DMA, which is at 6132. Reversal level for this uptrend is at 20DMA, i.e. at 6115. Therefore, we would advise to use any fall as a Buying opportunity with an upside target of 6400," said Ashish Shroff, technical analyst, Ambit Capital.



BSE Midcap Index was up 0.38 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 0.85 per cent higher.



Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE FMCG Index was up 2.52 per cent, BSE Realty Index gained 1.48 per cent and BSE Bankex was up 0.05 per cent. BSE Oil&gas Index slipped 0.31 per cent.



Hindustan Unilever (4.30%), HDFC Bank (2.42%) TCS (2.25%), Sterlite Industries (2.04%) and Bharti Airtel (1.74%) were the top Sensex gainers.



Power Grid Corporation ended 4.98% higher as the company entered the capital market with a follow-on public offer to raise around Rs 7,600 crore in the price band of Rs 85-90 per share. Most brokerages have advised investors to 'Subscribe' to the issue.



State Bank of India (-4.40%), Maruti (-1.20%), Reliance Infrastructure (-1.03%), ONGC (-0.84%) and Tata Power (-0.44%) led the losers pack.



SBI had posted a 22.2 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 2,437.1 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, against a profit of Rs 3,133.1 crore in the same period last year.



Market breadth was positive on the BSE with 1707 gainers against 1222 losers.



Meanwhile, European markets gained momentum and futures indicate a positive start on Wall Street. At 5 pm IST; Dow Jones futures was up 0.16 per cent, S&P 500 moved 0.10 per cent higher and Nasdaq advanced 0.31 per cent.
