The meeting of State Variety Approval Committee for fruits, vegetables and flowers was held at Farmers Service Centre, PAU, under the chairmanship of Dr L.S. Brar, Director of Horticulture, Punjab. Briefing about the meeting, Dr M.S. Gill, Director Extension Education, said that one variety of fruit and four varieties of Gladiolus were recommended for general cultivation in the state.
Pink Elegance (PG – 14) variety takes 86 days to flowering with 17 days vase life. The florets are soft pink coloured with magenta spot in the centre. Its leaves are pale and sword shaped. This variety produces one cormel per corn and is suitable for cut flower production.
The variety Punjab Flame (PG-21) produces one corm, 6o cormels per corm and is suitable for cut flower production. The leaves are thin, sword shaped and dark green with maroon tinge. It takes 114 days to flowering and has 16 days vase life. The florets are carmines pink with prominent dark red blotch.
The leaves of Glance (PG-41) are green, thick and sword shaped. Its spike length is 85 cm and 12 florets per spike facing on front side in alternate row arrangement. The florets are bright orange with yellow centre. It takes 78 days to flowering and has 13 days vase life. This variety produces 2-3 corms, 12 cormels per corn and is suitable for landscaping.
The leaves of Lemon delight (PG-45) are dark green with brown tinge and the florets are of lemon yellow colour. It takes 80 days to flowering and has 13 days vase life and is suitable for landscaping.
Further elaborating, Dr Gill added that the fruit variety Pear (Nijisseiki) is tree spreading, medium in vigour, leaf color green, fruit size medium, ground colour golden brown, flesh whitish, TSS 12.9%, mature fruits very soft, fruit firmness (11.17lbf), very juicy (74.6% juice), matures in end June to first week of July, fruit ripen on tree and yields 80.2 kg per tree.
