Rouvanjit suicide case: La Marts Principal, teachers held, out on bail

Almost eight months after 14-year-old Rouvanjit Rawla, a Class VIII student committed suicide, the police today arrested the principal of La Martiniere School, Sunirmal Chakrabarti, and three other teachers — L G Gunion, David Ryon and Partha Dutta. All four were released on bail.

Rouvanjit had committed suicide on February 12, a few days after he was reportedly caned by the principal. The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which conducted an inquiry in June, had found the principal and teachers guilty and recommended action against them. The accused, who were arrested early morning today, were produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rabi Ranjan Chakrabarty in the afternoon. The judge ruled that the charges filed under Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act and Sections 323, 324, 352 of the IPC were bailable offences. They were then granted bail against personal bonds of Rs 500 each.

Meanwhile, the school maintained that it would not remove the principal. "The principal will perform his usual duties," said Supriya Dhar, the secretary of the school.

A governing body meeting has been called on Tuesday to discuss the issue.
