PAU ALUMNA GETS \'GATERSLEBEN RESEARCH AWARD\' FOR HER LANDMARK AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH

Dr Navreet K. Bhullar, an alumna of Punjab Agricultural University, has brought laurels to her alma-mater by clinching the \'Gatersleben Research Award\' in recognition of her research work on allele mining for powdery mildew resistance genes from wheat genetic resources carried out at the University of Zurich from 2004-2009. Being one of the first extensive studies of molecular allele mining on crop plant, this work has evoked great interest among the scientific community.

Navreet did her Masters in Genetics from Punjab Agricultural University in 2002 before moving to University of Zurich (Switzerland) for her doctoral study where she continued as a post doctoral researcher. Since January 2010, she has been working as Cereal Research Group Leader at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland. Her recent research interest has been to study molecular mechanisms underlying the micro-nutrient composition in cereal grains; Cereal bio-fortification through biotechnological approaches; and molecular screening of cereal germplasm to identify novel plant genes against biotic and abiotic stresses.

The \'Gatersleben Research Award\' (incl. Euro 2500) is bestowed upon every two years by the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK), Gatersleben, Germany, to recognize crop research relevant to the development of new knowledge about the structure, function and evolution of the genetic material; conservation and exploration of diversity of crop plants, their ancestors and relatives; and contribution to the advancement of applied plant breeding.

Congratulating the scientist, the PAU, Vice Chancellor, Dr Manjit Singh Kang said that Dr Navreet has done PAU proud with her landmark research adding that it will inspire other aspiring students and researchers. In his address to the audience during the award presentation ceremony, Dr. Andreas Graner, Director of IPK, while referring to one of the reviewers remarks, stated that 'this work is a landmark in utilization of germplasm resources'.
