JK to tax water used to generate power

Srinagar, Oct 10: A Bill passed in Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Saturday, Oct 9, will tax the water used for power generation in the state.

Buzz up!"Even if we fix a rate of only 25 paisa for every cubic meter of water that goes in power houses, it will generate the state Rs 850 crores a year," said Taj Mohi-ud-Din, irrigation minister.

Taj said the it was necessary to regulate the states water resources as it is the responsibility of the state government to ensure safety of the lives and properties of the people.

He also added that the JK Water Resources(Regulation and Management) Bill, 2010, will control water supply, drainage, irrigation, improvement in the flow of water, floods, protection and management of dams.

Though the law would bring every water user under its purview, the immediate idea is to make NHPC Ltd, the national hydro power utility, pay for the water it uses to generate power.

Jammu Kashmir will be the first Indian state to impose tax on water for generating electricity, because no state in India is taxing the usage of water that goes to generate energy
