CM protecting CPM harmads

KOLKATA: Barely an hour after Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee launched a scathing attack on the Maoists and Trinamool Congress at a public rally in Midnapore, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee hit back at the chief minister, saying that Bhattacharjee went there to protect the \"CPM harmads\". Mamata announced that she will be addressing a public gathering at the same place in Midnapore on October 6.

The Trinamool chief\'s comment came in response to the CM\'s allegation that Trinamool was trying to protect the Maoists. This verbal duel between the two leaders is a recent development in Bengal politics, adding fuel to the sound and fury in the run up to the assembly polls.

The Trinamool chief held that the CPM harmads are successfully continuing their terror run, thanks to the presence of the security forces in Jangalmahal. She wanted the Centre to withdraw the central forces. \"I will take up the matter with the Prime Minister, the Union home minister and finance minister, though I told them about it earlier,\" the railway minister said.

Pointing out that the Left Front meeting was held in Midnapore town, and not at Lalgargh like the one addressed by her, Mamata said: \"He (CM) doesn\'t have the guts to hold a meeting at Lalgarh. He went to Midnapore to protect the gun-toting CPM harmads in police uniform who have been terrorising the locals. People have left their homes because of these harmads, turning a huge area into a smashan nagari (a dead town).\"

But actually, the chief minister spent more than two hours from 11.30am to 2pm at the Midnapore Circuit House, holding meeting with district officials over ways to arrange for food and work for those who are coming back home in West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia after months. The CM asked district magistrate Narayan Swarup Nigam to help out these people with foodgrains at `2, even if they don\'t have BPL cards. Bhattacharjee urged officials to ensure that the poor get at least two square meals a day, for most of them don\'t have a work at hand, because of the drought. The CM told the DM that he had a talk with state finance minister and food minister and asked them to make allocations from the APL food stock at a subsidised price. He also asked officials to beef up NREGS work in these areas. Bhattacharjee also gave strict instructions to West Midnapore SP Manoj Verma to tackle Maoists without harassing innocent villagers.

There was a breach in the CM\'s security on his way to Midnapore as the police made a last minute change to his route and diverted the CM\'s convoy via Dharma to Midnapore town. Trouble broke out near Amtala Ghat when people were kept waiting with a patient bitten by a snake. The broke the police barricade and passed by, as the CM\'s convoy proceeded towards the town.
