MC to withdraw chlorination work from pvt contractors

LUDHIANA: The municipal corporation has decided to withdraw the contract of chlorination of tubewells, which was assigned to various private contractors. Facing the ire of residents due to spread of water-borne diseases in the city, the civic body is now planning to take the callous contractors to task.

MC officials have decided to undertake the task of chlorinating the tubewells on their own as the private contractors failed to complete the exercise before the advent of rainy season.

The civic body has purchased the bleaching powder used in the process of chlorination by inviting tenders amounting to Rs 89 lakh. Meanwhile, MC is planning to hire some professional agencies in place of individual contractors to make sure that tubewells are maintained within a time-bound manner.

The move has also been taken to ensure that MC officials minting money out of tenders served to contractors are given no opportunity to manipulate allotment process.

MC has also replaced dysfunctional chlorinators installed for 27 tubewells along the Buddha Nullah belt, from where most cases of water-borne diseases are reported.

XEN, operation and maintenance, said discrepancies were found in the working of contractors. "This is the reason why we decided to undertake the task ourselves."
