Lure for easy money lands 4 in lock-up

MOHALI: Greed to earn easy and become rich overnight has landed four juveniles in police net. City cops on Tuesday claimed to have busted a gang of four vehicle thieves whose involvement in at least half-a-dozen vehicle thefts has been traced. Cops have also suspected their role in a prison break at a juvenile home in Ludhiana on July 10 and in the murder of an ascetic in Manali, the previous year.

The foursome, two boys and two girls, Sandeep Kumar alias Sunny, his sister, Sunita alias Rita and their friends, Syan & Aasma aka Tamanna were apprehended from Zirakpur, by a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) team led by superintendent of police (SP), detective Varinderpal Singh and deputy superintendent of police (DSP), detective Satnam Singh.

According to the police, all four accused were involved in a car-jacking incident on the night of July 15-16, when they bashed up the driver of a private taxi, a Solan resident, Rajinder Kumar and robbed him at gun-point. They dumped him near the railway crossing at Jagatpura and fled with the car, mobile phone and a wallet, which contained Rs 3,000 in cash, along with the car\'s documents.

SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that the accused had laid hands on a fake registration certificate for the stolen car and had planned to sell it in Zirakpur. The raid at their residence at Zirakpur aided in nabbing the accused and leaded to the arrest of Irishpal Singh, a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, who was to buy the stolen car. Bhullar added that the accused were apprehended with two country-made 32 bore pistols, six live cartridges, stolen taxi and the fake documents of the car.

Investigations revealed that Sandeep and Sunita who were accused in the Manali murder case spent their time at a juvenile home in Ludhiana.

While Sunita was released on bail in December last year, Sandeep had engineered a prison break, on July 10 with help from several other inmates of the juvenile home. Further, it was revealed that that the accused had planned to work as contract killers by sourcing pistols and cartridges from UP.
