HC asks Sofat to join police probe on Aug 8

PANCHKULA: In an important development in an attempt-to-murder case registered against Ludhiana-based doctor Sumit Sofat, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday directed him to be present in Chandimandir Police Station on August 8.

The high court issued these directions while hearing the anticipatory bail application filed by Sofat. Meanwhile, the interim bail granted to Sofat would continue till the next date of hearing on August 12. Earlier, the high court had directed the HC registry department to list all cases pertaining to Sofat before a single bench.

Panchkula police had registered an FIR against the doctor after he lodged a complaint in July 2009, stating that he had been robbed of Rs 33 lakh cash by Ramesh Pashan and his sons--Vinayak and Abhinav--at Morni Hills. The amount was kept in Sofat's SUV. He had further alleged that Pashans had fired gunshots at his driver Nelson, who had reportedly suffered two bullet injuries on the chest. Pashan and his sons had attacked Nelson with the help of their driver, Ranjit, and two other unidentified persons, Sofat had claimed.

Panchkula police had summoned the Pashan family, which produced evidence that the entire story was cooked up by the doctor to avenge his arrest on their complaint last year. They had reportedly presented photographs and a CD containing footage which showed that the entire family was present at Nirvana Club in Ludhiana to celebrate the ring ceremony of Vinayak at the time of the incident. They also submitted receipts and bills pertaining to expenses incurred by them at the club.

During investigations, police found that Sofat had a dispute with Pashans over some property issue since 2005. The cops also maintained that the doctor had framed false charges against the family.
