262 trained in two years by employment department

LUDHIANA: The employment exchange is now department of employment generation and training.

Except for the name, nothing has changed on the old premises in its new incarnation as the department fails to produce any ray of hope for the unemployed youth registered with it.

As the name conveys, after the makeover, it is the first duty of the department to train youths to sharpen their capabilities to work in field. But for more than the last two months, it has stopped the entire training programmes for unknown reasons.

Even the district branch of the department has failed miserably as it has trained only 262 youngsters in the last two years. These numbers are too small when compared to the lakhs of unemployed youth all over the district.

Till now, the department has no record available with it to prove a single placement of any unemployed registered with it. Superintendent Jagjit Kaur said, "At the moment, we can't say if any of the trainee has got placed. We are still awaiting reports to know if any one, trained under the department, got the job."

Surprisingly, the department has failed to keep track of small number of trainees who joined its training programme in the hope of getting a job.

On other side, department officials are not interested in registering more unemployed youths with it.

A youngster from a nearby village, Malkit Singh said, "It is my third visit to the office but officials are refusing to register me for one reason or the other. They do not understand, how mentally difficult it is to prove yourself unemployed. I am not fond of getting myself registered as unemployed."

On the functioning of the department, deputy director Minakshi Sharma said, "We do not provide any information about our activities to a person not registered with the department."
