Student death: HRD ministry asks La Martiniere to submit report

KOLKATA/NEW DELHI: La Martiniere School was on Wednesday asked to submit a report on the events leading up to Class VIII student Rouvanjit Rawla\'s suicide and the subsequent action taken by the school authorities. The directive came from the ministry of human resource development (HRD) team after it visited the school.

The three-member team comprising Ramesh Bhattacharjee, member department of secondary and higher education (HRD), Anthony Arun Biswas and Dilip Datta called on the secretary to the La Martiniere Board of Governors Supriyo Dhar and school principal Sunirmal Chakravarthy. The team set a two-day deadline for the report. Another HRD team from Delhi will visit the school early next week after which a report will be prepared, it was announced.

\"The Bishop of Kolkata, who happens to be head of school\'s governing body, should have taken more intitiative. It\'s unfortunate that he didn\'t even visit the school. Instead, the Bishop left the country even as controversy raged and enquiries were going on. Also, there is a designated officer of state government who is authorized to look into such matters. But he didn\'t act either,\" said Ramesh Bhattacharjee.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, in its report, has recommended the suspension of La Martiniere principal and head of middle school. The three-member NCPCR team says suspension will facilitate cop inquiry into caning incident and Rouvanjit\'s suicide.
