Mor Pankh’, by eminent Punjabi poet Prof Gurbhajan Gill

The newly published collection of ghazals, 'Mor Pankh', by eminent Punjabi poet and Punjabi Sahit Akademy president, Prof Gurbhajan Gill was released by S. Sewa Singh Sekhwan, Cabinet minister for Information and Public Relation, NRIs Affairs, Public Grievances and Defense Services Welfare, at a function organised by Baba Farid Foundation International at their head office on Ferozepur Road, here.



The function was presided over by S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Member Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and S. Hira Singh Gabria, Cabinet Minister for Jails, Cultural Affairs, Archives & museums, Printing & Stationary and Tourism was the guest of honour.



Dr Nirmal Jaura gave a brief introduction about Prof Gurbhajan Gill to the audience. "This is Prof Gurbhajan Gill's tenth anthology of poetry, which comprises of 103 ghazals on social, cultural and rural life of Punjab."



While speaking on the occasion, S. Sewa Singh Sekhwan said that the form of ghazals in Prof Gill's newly published book 'Mor Pankh' have been inherited from the Persian and Urdu tradition of ghazal.



"And the text is the genesis of Punjab's folklore, tradition and culture. I am proud of the fact that both me and Gill are from the Majha region of the state, which has produced eminent writers such as Sh. I. C. Nanda, Sh. Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Principal Sujan Singh and many others," S. Sekhwan said.



S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said that I have known Gill since the year 1978 and I have been continuously keeping a close watch on his writings. "His tenth book brings me personal happiness. I congratulate him," he said.



S. Hira Singh Gabria said that the Punjabi writers should depict the miseries and sorrows of the people of this land through their poetry. "And on the other hand, they should also preserve their heroic tradition with their writings and I believe that poetry is the best medium to do so."

Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman said that Gill is a poet who ventures through time and space with his literary imagination and foresighted vision. "The main aim of his writings is to expose and purge society of its foibles and shortcomings in the most rational and formulative style. He portrays with wisdom the cultural and moral values, the dehumanisation of humans, the onslaughts of globalisation, the disruption and favouritism prevailing in society, the environmental degradation the moral stagnation and shallowness of relationships."



S. Pritam Singh Bharowal proposed a vote of thanks in the end.



Prominent among those present on the occasion were, Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar, former Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president and Chairman of the Punjab State Backward Classes Commission, Dr Kiranjot Kaur, senior SGPC member and granddaughter of Master Tara Singh, S. Santa Singh Umedpuri, Chairman, Punjab Subordinate services Selection Board, S. Gurcharan Singh Grewal, president Sikh Students Federation, S. Pritam Singh Bharowal, Chairman, Baba Farid Foundation International, Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Additional Director, Centre for Communication and International Linkages, PAU, Dr Nirmal Jaura, General Secretary, Baba Farid Foundation International, S. Sukhwinderpal Singh Garcha, Senior Akali Leader, besides many others.
