US President Barack Obama believes that General Stanley McChrystal, the former commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, should retire as four-star general and his administration would ensure that, White House has said.
General McChrystal, resigned from the position last week after the appearance of an interview in the Rolling Stone magazine in which he was seen highly critical of the Obama Administration.
Obama accepted his resignation and quickly nominated General David Petraeus as his new Commander for Afghanistan.
McChrystal had on Monday requested the Pentagon that he wants to take pre-mature retirement.
\"General McChrystal alerted the Pentagon on Tuesday that he would be leaving active duty. As you also know, he has not been in the position, a four-star position long enough to retire as a four-star,\" White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.
\"The President believes and has talked with (Defense) Secretary (Robert) Gates about this and we will do whatever is necessary to ensure that somebody who has served the country as ably as he has, can retire at a four-star level,\" he said.
Praising General McChrystal, Gibbs said, he always provided in the Situation Room the best information that he had available to him about developments in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, several lawmakers praised McChrystal for his leading role in war against terrorism in Afghanistan.
\"I want to express my gratitude to General McChrystal for his great service to our nation over three decades. Fate takes strange bounces at times, and working through them with dignity and honour, as he has, is a hallmark of leadership and of character,\" said Senator Carl Levin, Chairman of Senate Armed Services Committee, during the confirmation hearing for his replacement General David Petraeus.
\"He\'s a man of unrivaled integrity, and what is most impressive about his long record of military excellence is how much of it remains cloaked in silence,\" Senator John McCain said about his at the hearing.
\"Few understand fully how General McChrystal systematically dismantled al Qaeda in Iraq, or how he began to turn around our failing war in Afghanistan. These achievements and other like them are the true measure of Stanley McChrystal, and they will earn him an honored place in our history,\" McCain said.
