Soren’s decision irks JMM MLAs

The party leadership's "unilateral" decision to hand over the reins of the Jharkhand government to the Bharatiya Janata Party has irked some Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) legislators.

JMM legislature party leader Hemant Soren, who is Chief Minister Shibu Soren's son, met the legislators on Friday. But MLAs Simon Marandi and Teklal Mahto have opposed the move outright.

Marandi said he would not support a BJP-led coalition. "The BJP has divorced us," he said, adding Shibu Soren should undergo a medical test to ascertain the reasons for his loss of memory.

"I am appealing to bureaucrats to set up a medical board for Soren for a thorough clinical checkup," he said. "Shibu Soren should come out and talk to the media."

Mahto said the JMM was with the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) now.

The party legislators whose support Marandi and Mahto are claiming to have are Lobin Hembrom, Bidyut Baran Mahto and Ram Das Soren.

Aquil Akhtar, Sita Soren and Jagarnath Mahto are maintaining a neutral stand.

Though the rank and file in the party appears divided on the issue, a split within the JMM appears unlikely even if the party goes ahead with its proposal of replacing Shibu Soren as chief minister by someone from the BJP.
