COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA

LUDHIANA(Saggu)

A national call given by various left and democratic parties the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI) and Lok Bhalai Party staged a Protest and symbolic one hour rail roko at the railway station Ludhiana to protest against rise in prices of essential commodities. Dr.Joginder Dyal member central executive committee addressing the rally said that the inflation of food prices has gone up to 20% and it is a very worrisome trend as food is the basic thing required to sustain life. The earlier statement of the government that the inflation had gone to negative was a fraud and lie with the people as the prices of essential commodities have risen sky high during the last few month. The government is out to please lobbies of sugar and other things and finding lame excuses. He demanded that to prevent malnutrition and provide basic minimum food supplements at least 33% of the national budget should be spent on food security. Universal public distribution of essential items should be ensured. He also criticized the repressive policies of the govt. on the poor people demanding basic minimum requirements. Com.Charan Singh Virdi-secretary CPI(M) Punjab while referring to the report by the Arjun Sen Gupta committee which was appointed by the previous government that 77% population lives on less than Rs. 20-00 a day in our country, he said that no wonder majority of our population is under nourished as with today's prices minimum cost of food necessary to just sustain life is today more than Rs.50-00 per day, where in one only consumes basic food items like floor, daal, vegetables, tea, rice, ghee and masalas. It is high time that the government looks after the interests of the low income groups who should also get a balanced meal and a quality life. Whereas the rich will be able to manage with this the poor and the lower middle income group will have to shelve their resources to cook food, he warned. This added with the job cuts, contractualistaion of jobs with low wages and no job security, the life of people is going to be miserable in time to come. Mr.Avtar Singh Mullanpuri of Lok Bhalai Party said the government who is bent upon privatization of everything is running away from its responsibility from even providing education and health to the people. He demanded immediate control on prices of essential commodities. He further pointed out that the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel has already shown effects of hike in prices on all basic commodities adding to miseries of the people.
