Sikhs Against 84 Accused Tytler, Sajjan Kumar\'s Nomination by Congress

Former Deputy Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha and chief whip of the Congress Legislature PartyBir Devinder Singh also joined the call in demanding that the Congress high command review party ticket allocation to both 1984 massacre-of-Sikhs-accused Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

NEW DELHI - A Sikh group on Tuesday expressed displeasure over Congress\' decision to nominate Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar for the Lok Sabha elections from Delhi, alleging that they were yet to get a clean chit in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

The All India Riot Victim Relief Committee submitted a memorandum to party President Sonia Gandhi requesting her to withdraw both Tytler and Kumar from contesting the election, saying \"court cases involving them were still going on\".

The group said if Congress will allow the two leaders to contest the polls, then it will start agitation against the party in Delhi to ensure its defeat.

The memorandum said that by giving tickets to them, the Congress has ignored the suffering the Sikh community underwent during the riots when several people were killed and left homeless.

\"Sikh community considers Congress as a secular party but the nomination of Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler has deeply hurt them,\" Mohan Singh, president of the Committee, said.

Former Deputy Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha and chief whip of the Congress Legislature Party Bir Devinder Singh also joined the call in demanding that the Congress high command review party ticket allocation to both 1984 massacre-of-Sikhs-accused Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

Singh, who was an aspirant for Congress ticket from Anandpur Sahib, says by giving tickets to both Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, the party has shown total disregard to Sikh ethos.

Now, when the court is recording the evidence against them, the party should have avoided giving them ticket for the Lok Sabha elections. It is time for the party to review its decision.

On the one hand we are trying to assuage the hurt feelings of the Sikh community after the 1984 genocide while on the other we are rewarding those who were allegedly responsible for this worst ever crime against a particular minority community. Now, when the process to prosecute them is in progress, how can Congressmen face the ire of the community that is still feeling hurt over the 1984 and subsequent events, says Bir Devinder.

It is not only Bir Devinder, but also other Congress leaders have expressed dismay over ticket allocation to Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

They maintain that by giving them tickets, the Congress has virtually endorsed their actions of 1984 and afterwards. With what face Congress candidates can go and ask for Sikh votes? they ask.

Some of Congress leaders want the party high command to wait till those accused of instigating anti-Sikh riots are acquitted by courts. They should not be given any office or party ticket in any election. This, they say, would help in assuaging the hurt feelings of the Sikhs faster than anything else.

Further, it would also deny other parties a handle to criticise the Congress for backing Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

Meanwhile, The choice of Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar as Congress nominees for the Lok Sabha elections has upset Sikhs in Punjab. Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, secretary, SAD, has said the names will be opposed by every right-thinking person.

He said anti-Sikh violence of 1984 is a blot on the nation and these Congress leaders were behind it. Dr Cheema questioned the intention of Congress leadership and motive behind the decision to give ticket those indicted by the Nanavati Commission and the CBI has again started probe against these accused.

Dr Cheema has said his party had taken a serious notice of the silence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on this sensitive issue. He added the Prime Minister had assured Parliament that the persons held guilty by the Nanavati Commission would be given strict punishment.

He said all parties had demanded action against the persons indicted by the Nanavati Commission.

Motorola Adds Full Redundancy and Increased Downstream Capacity to Proven High-Density I-CMTS Solution

HORSHAM, Pa., March 30, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the launch of software release 5.2 for the widely deployed DOCSIS(R) 3.0 CableLabs(R) Bronze Qualified Motorola BSR 64000 integrated CMTS (I-CMTS). Release 5.2 introduces TX32 redundancy providing an advanced level of system-wide high-availability and service assurance for ultra-broadband networks, delivering downstream bonded services for commercial and high-tier customers as well as increased service tiers for residential customers. In addition, the new release supports a doubling of BSR 64000 downstream capacity while continuing investment protection that has made the BSR 64000 the easiest CMTS platform to migrate from DOCSIS 2.0 to DOCSIS 3.0.

Cable operators require greater and more cost-effective downstream capacity in order to support ultra-broadband applications such as the downloading and streaming of HDTV and the viewing of IPTV. At the same time, increasing competition in consumer broadband services and a heightened focus on commercial services is driving cable operators to differentiate on the quality of their service. These dynamics place an even greater demand on increased network capacity and end-to-end redundancy, both of which release 5.2 and the BSR 64000 I-CMTS solution deliver in the most cost effective manner.

"Cable operators are seeking to differentiate themselves in today's highly competitive broadband market not only by winning the speed race, but by increasing their focus on network availability. Downtime to the consumer is unacceptable where there is a choice of service providers." said Dr. George H. Simmons, corporate vice president and general manager, Access Network Solutions, Motorola, Inc. "With BSR software release 5.2, cable operators can increase downstream capacity, offer ultra-broadband speeds of up to 160 Mbps, and maintain high-availability of their DOCSIS based voice, video and data services all while protecting their legacy investments."

Release 5.2 expands downstream capacity per BSR 64000 with the support of dual TX32 modules per chassis. This increase in downstream channel density and bandwidth helps cable operators provide greater capacity and bandwidth for commercial and high-tier residential customers. In addition, operators can now leverage superior control of IPTV traffic with greater multicast traffic control, enhanced multipath routing redundancy, and subscriber billing with L2 MAC configuration. The BSR 64000 also supports superior bandwidth management capabilities by supporting both DOCSIS 3.0 downstream channel bonding and dynamic load balancing simultaneously across existing 2:8 and TX32 modules.

Motorola's DOCSIS 3.0 Bronze qualified CMTS includes support for IPv4 and IPv6 and is backwards compatible with DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 standards to further protect investments in operators' CPE portfolio. Designed for service assurance, the BSR 64000 is also compatible with Motorola's NBBS device management platform and Motorola's eCare solution for remote customer configuration and support.

Click here for more information on Motorola's DOCSIS 3.0 ultra-broadband products.

Motorola will showcase the BSR 64000 release 5.2 at Motorola's booth (#2037) at The Cable Show, April 1-3 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. Stay tuned to the Motorola blog for more Motorola news and industry commentary including live coverage on site at the Cable Show: www.mediaexperiences2go.com.

Punjab, bestseller for luxury cars in India

Punjab has stood one of the bestsellers for the luxuy cars sales despite having the GDP growth rate of 5% which is approximately just just high than the national growth rate of 9% and the agriculture growth rate of mere 2%.

The real-estate boom in punjab touched high and the landlords made quite a good bucks by selling thier lands and the quick earned money played a role on spending on luxury cars.

BMW sold more than 90 cars in less than 6 months while Daimler is expecting to sell 200 units during its financial year. Ludhiana hold the tag of highest numb er of Mercedes and the number is growing. Other premium models like Skoda and Corolla are also very popular brands in the state. Volvo has appointed a new dealer location in Chandigarh.

The research shows that despite the overall picture of economy growth in punjab where state has slipped to 6th slot in terms of per capita income and many industrial units relocated to neaighbouring states due to tax and other lack of resoruces, the car market is still up and growing.

NRI money is also playing a role in giving rise to the luxury car market and easy availiability of back credits have also guven a push to this growth.

Yuba city, A well know for punjabi people and has become a mini punjab in USA. It is believed that Yuba city and surroundng areas are most densily populated with punjabi community.

Its called mini punjabi due to the fact that you can see the punjabi atmosphere if you go around the city as you may definately find things related to punjab and its culture.

Punjabi people in california have been playing a well role in the community activities and now even the mainstream people can identify punjabis in the region.

You can find people of this community being involved in from small scale businesses to multi crore companies, also on the farming field you can find the fields owned by punjabi.

Some of the big real estate agents are punjabi in california who have been on the top charts on the annual sales chart.

In next few years it is also believed that people from this area may be playing active role in the American polititcs.

Real Estate in California

Real estate prices are estimated to fall and decline and the most affected area anticipated in USA is west-coast. The areas on the list are Stokton California, Merced California, Reno Nevada, Fresno Ca, Vallejo/Fairfield , Ca, Las Vegas Nevada, Bakersfield Ca, Sacramento Ca, Washinton DC, Tucson Arizona and is anticipated that the price of the real estate may decline in the coming months. The range of decline is guessed to be between 6% to 8%.

Especially the decline might be seen in the residential properties. Although the prices have been touching sky heights in the past but it may be a good time to purchase a new property for those who have been waiting.

In the recent years it was seen that people had started looking to relocate due to the high prices and many of them had even relocated themself to other cities of USA.

Although one should not simply jump on buying the real-esate in california, one must get consultation from a good real-estate advisor personally and then look at the market

Housing Market going up in Punjab real estate dimensions

Real estate and housing market is gradually picking up again in Punjab. The market saw a slow down in the last half of the previous year and first quarter of 2009. The symptoms of marketting catching up has started sneaking up with the dollar value being going up.

Another interesting factor which may have feuled the punjab property market is with some NRI securing their properties back home in punjab after US companies started laying off people in many industries. During this downtime in US market, NRI are attracted more towards buying property and real estate in punjab rather than investing in abroad.

It is estimated that approx more than 10,000 NRI from US alone will deal in property buying and selling in Punjab alone during the current year. NRI Punjabi can be heard talking to each other inquring about rates and location of interest with each other. I am looking for a location which is similiar to the luxary and ease offered in USA along with a little privacy, says Jaspreet Singh, a Gas Station owner, who plans to visit India during this summer.

Although with too much fraud going on in real-estate and lack of proper knowledge about property for NRIs, many a times its still hard to find realtor who works openly with NRIs.

Forum Nokia announces winners of Mobile Games University Competition 2009

Student developers work against the clock to submit "the mobile games of tomorrow"

GDC - San Francisco, CA - Forum Nokia, the largest mobile development community worldwide, has today revealed the winners of its global Mobile Games University Competition. Parsons The New School for Design in the US and The Upper Austria University have scooped the two prestigious top spots, being chosen above the other participating Forum Nokia PRO universities. Students were invited by Nokia to design, prototype and showcase new ideas for future mobile games. The two winning teams will receive a trip to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, March 23rd to 27th.

Forum Nokia PRO universities participated in the competition, submitting 44 games in total. The two winning games, not ranked in order, were:

'Weekness': Parsons The New School for Design, US
By Drew Cogbill, Yumi Endo and Rabia Malik, 'Weekness' is a game built upon the concept that friends share their SMS activity, resulting in social interactions that reflect individual communication styles, extending the functionality of text messaging into a game. User generated content plays a key and innovative role in the game-play. Weekness is developed for Flash Lite 3.0 and the Adobe Flash Lite Distributable Player.
http://dave.parsons.edu/courses/course/view.php?id=5&topic=1

'MooLan': The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences, Hagenberg
By Michael Holzl and Bernhard Aufreiter from the department of Mobile Computing, 'MooLan' is a space shuttle pilot maneouvering game which utilizes handset accelerometer and proximity sensors as well as the camera. The game concept is adapted from the classic 'Moon Lander' game but takes it in a new direction through the innovative use of platform functionalities and fully sensor-based control mechanics.
http://www.symbianresources.com/projects/moolan.php

"This competition reveals how the next-generation of game designers will help redefine the very essence of gaming by emphasizing the crucial role of social communication," said David Carroll, Assistant Professor of Media Design, Parsons The New School for Design. "It signals a new era of socially intertwined games where the distinction between the producer and player are completely blurred."

"We're thrilled to have been picked as a winner," said Bernhard Aufreiter, Upper Austria University. "We really wanted to maximize our use of handset features like sensors and camera technology - there are so many exciting innovations that can be applied to mobile games now. It has been great to have the opportunity to work with Nokia and be rewarded for our efforts. We're looking forward to being able to network with other like-minded developers at GDC and pick up some real industry insights."

"We were really impressed by the standard of entries we received, especially seeing as the students had to develop these concepts in just a few weeks," said Dr Mark Ollila, Director of Technology and Strategy and Head of Games Publishing, Nokia. "Games were judged on criteria including entertainment value, creativity and usability. This kind of competition really showcases the raw talent of our next-generation of mobile games developers and provides an insight into the potential of our industry."

Please visit us at GDC! The N-Gage by Nokia booth is #5605, North Hall, Moscone Center.

Riku Suomela, Nokia, will be giving a talk on the Forum Nokia Mobile Games University Competition from 11.00 - 12.00pm on Wednesday 25th March. The winning designs will be demo'd straight after.

Sikh taxi driver who turned millionaire hit hard in Oz bushfires

Adelaide: The story of Charanamat Singh, the Sikh taxi driver-turned-millionaire in Northern Australia, has all the trappings of a rags-to-riches Bollywood thriller.

However, the gritty farmer was turned into a pauper overnight after the recent bushfires in Victoria destroyed his 150-acre farm, buildings and equipment worth millions of dollars.

Every thing was gutted in front our eyes in the last week of February 2009. Over 200 people died in the area due to fires that left no time for anyone to flee. I thank the Almighty that all of us, my wife, children, brother and father, managed to stay alive, Singh told visiting Indian journalists in Melbourne.

A devout Sikh, 55-year-old Singh who hails from Phillaur district, had left his native land disenchanted with militancy in Punjab in 1986.

Initially, he started as a taxi driver in Melbourne, the home of the large Indian expatriate community, and never looked back. Burning with an urge to become a farmer, like his family members back in Phillaur, Singh, by dint of hard work, made it big after he managed to save enough to own few taxies and later mobilised bank loans to buy large tracts of land, about 50 km from Melbourne where he grew broccoli and beans and produced bottled water from the water springs in his farm.

Motorola Expands On Demand Platform to Enhance Support for Rapidly Growing On Demand Libraries

Motorola, Inc.

--New Motorola B-3 Video Server leverages Adaptive Media Management framework to optimize service providers' streaming, storage, and network resources

HORSHAM, Pa., March 17, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today introduced the Motorola B-3 Video Server, creating the broadest, most flexible lineup of solid-state on demand servers in the industry. Designed to address small- to medium-sized streaming sites, the B-3 complements the Motorola B-1, the world's most widely deployed solid-state on demand server. When joined with the Motorola CPS1000 Content Propagation System, the Motorola on demand platform addresses the rapid growth in on-demand usage and content libraries while optimizing operator storage, streaming and network resources.

The Motorola B-3 Video Server leverages industry-standard hardware to create a high-performance, highly scalable, fault tolerant server that delivers premium support for video on demand (VOD), time-shifted TV, on demand ad insertion, network DVR (nDVR), and other advanced services. Available from early Q2 09, the B-3 efficiently scales from several hundred to more than 3,000 streams and can be configured as a standalone server with integrated content library, or as an edge server deployed alongside a B-1 .

As on demand usage and libraries rapidly expand, operators require on demand networks that are flexible enough to cater to changing demands. In response, Motorola integrated Adaptive Media Management throughout its on demand portfolio. The Motorola Adaptive Media Management (AMM) algorithms were developed by analyzing data from 160 B-1 deployments encompassing 900 thousand streams worldwide. CPS1000 utilizes AMM to distribute content and assign streaming resources across the network and to share content libraries between servers. AMM enables the B-1 and B-3 servers to select the optimal storage and streaming technologies. The result is the optimization streaming and network resources, reduction in storage costs, and ability to deliver the level of choice consumers want.

"The new B-3 server expands Motorola's on demand hardware and software portfolio, organized around the Adaptive Media Management framework," said Sean Welch, director, on demand video for the Motorola Home and Networks Mobility business. "Adaptive Media Management enables our service provider customers to optimize their streaming, storage and network bandwidth resources, reducing operational and capital expenses even as they face unprecedented growth in on demand libraries and consumer demand for personalized media experiences."

For more information on Motorola's on demand portfolio, including hardware and software solutions, please visit the on demand section of Motorola's website. Motorola will also have its on-demand and content management technology on display at The Cable Show, booth #2037, CCBN in Beijing #3502, and the IPTV World Forum in London #300. For commentary on broadband home solutions, including cable VOD technology, please visit the Motorola blog at www.mediaexperiences2go.com.

Motorola's Latest Broadband Solutions Offer High Availability, Resiliency and Security in the 4.9GHz Band

Motorola, Inc.

PTP 49600 and PMP 49400 wireless broadband solutions offer government, state and local agencies with robust and secure connectivity in the 4.9GHz licensed band.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., March 17, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced new additions to its proven and cost-effective Wireless Broadband portfolio - the Point-to-Point (PTP) 49600 series wireless Ethernet bridge and the Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) 49400 series wireless network access solution. Operating in the 4.9 GHz licensed band and offering high availability, these wireless broadband solutions provide public safety agencies and local governments with reliable, robust and secure wireless connectivity, while the lower cost of ownership makes them more affordable than leased lines or previously available licensed microwave alternatives.

"Both the PTP 49600 and the PMP 49400 are an affordable licensed band solution that can help public safety agencies and local governments support applications requiring additional bandwidth, reduce costs associated with leased lines, or backhaul the traffic on their two-way radio networks," said Phil Bolt, vice president and general manager, Motorola Wireless Broadband. "With years of field-proven experience in mission-critical communications, Motorola continues to be the trusted partner on which public safety and government agency professionals across the globe can depend for cost-effective, reliable and secure connectivity."

High availability and resilience

With the PTP 49600 solution, customers can replace costly leased lines while reducing their operating costs or establish ad-hoc connectivity for disaster recovery, emergency services and special events. Designed for customers who require always-on, secure and reliable connectivity and backhaul solutions that can perform in mission-critical situations, the PTP 49600 bridges can be deployed in harsh and challenging environments. By offering five-nines availability and latency of less than two milliseconds, PTP solutions are ideally suited to backhaul mission critical land mobile radio systems, such as Motorola's ASTRO(R) 25, as well as traffic from video surveillance cameras, Motorola Mesh nodes or 4.9 GHz hot spots and command centers. The PTP 49600 solution is an IP-based radio delivering up to 150 mbps and includes integrated T1/E1 ports to provide low latency and jitter for excellent voice quality, which is paramount for public safety and two-way radio system operators to support the critical nature of applications like 9-1-1 or disaster recovery efforts.

"As we looked to Motorola to help us improve the dispatch functions in our 9-1-1 Dispatch Center, we also sought to find a more cost-effective way to backhaul two-way radio traffic on our Astro system," said Tim McKee, director, 911 Dispatch Center, Chippewa County, Michigan. "We selected the PTP 49600 solution from Motorola because it operates in the 4.9 GHz licensed band, can be rapidly deployed and expanded, and provides a secure and affordable alternative to the T1 leased lines we currently use for connecting the radio towers in our county."

The PTP 49600 radios leverage time- and field-tested technologies inherent in Motorola's Wireless Broadband portfolio, meeting a wide range of public safety requirements like resistance to interference or fading as well as signal optimization for maximum data throughput, link quality and availability. They come with robust data security features, which can include an optional layer of security with FIPS-197-compliant AES encryption. A simple network design allows the PTP 49600 systems to complement existing networks and the radios are easy to install. The PTP LINKPlanner design tool allows customers and partners to quickly determine link performance for multiple links prior to deployment, taking into account multiple factors like landscape geography, distance, antenna height or transmit power. The deployment process is simple and quick, making these solutions also ideal for ad hoc, situation-driven connectivity, such as disaster recovery or special events.

Cost-effective alternative networks

The PMP 49400 series of access points (AP) and wireless subscriber modules (SM) provides government agencies and municipalities operating in the 4.9 GHz licensed band with a powerful, cost-effective solution for leased line replacement or enabling wireless video surveillance. By relying on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology, these broadband radios deliver exceptional near-line-of-sight (nLOS) coverage in locations where obstructions have previously limited wireless broadband access. For government agencies and municipalities, this means maximized communications, extended coverage, and the ability to provide backhaul or support bandwidth-intensive applications like video surveillance in areas previously hard and costly to reach.

The standard PMP 49400 Access Point configuration uses an integrated 90-degree antenna. In addition, the 400 series is also available as a connectorized solution, allowing operators of overlay, expanded or greenfield networks to choose the antennas they prefer. Leveraging the field- and time-proven technologies found in Motorola's PMP solutions, including dynamic frequency selection (DFS) and global positioning system (GPS) synchronization, the system provides a globally proven outdoor solution, with reduced power consumption, fast and simple deployment, high reliability, and low-cost ongoing operation. And, with Motorola's One Point Wireless Manager, network administrators can managing the wireless network easier by providing one unified and intuitive view of all network nodes, including real-time network performance for all equipment types in a map view.

The new PTP 49600 and PMP49400 solutions complement Motorola's MOTOA4(TM) mission critical portfolio. The 49600 provides secure and reliable backhaul across land mobile radio systems while the PMP49400 provides reliable and cost-effective point to multipoint broadband access and distribution.

The Joy of Seva

was nervous. It was my first day on the job as a crisis hotline volunteer.

Although I had just completed weeks of rigorous training on how to handle all types of calls - from anxiety, to depression, domestic abuse, and the dreaded suicide - I was still a little uneasy.

I met my mentor for the evening, an elderly white woman who lived in a suburb not too far from me. We made small talk, then she turned to her Danielle Steel novel, and I started thumbing through my training manual - both of us awaiting the next call.

Almost immediately, the phone rang.

\"This one\'s yours, kid,\" my mentor said.

I took one deep breath and picked up the phone. Apparently, there hadn\'t been one for months, but sure enough, my first call was a suicide. Even though we spent an extensive amount of time covering this topic in training, I instantly froze up.

I placed the caller on speaker and my mentor immediately took over.

What happened over the next 30 minutes will stay etched in my memory for the rest of my life. The caller was severely depressed about a health condition he had been battling since he was a child and - to make a long story short - while on the call, he had the dangerous combination of the means and a motivation to end his life.

Though under immense pressure, my mentor stayed completely calm and spoke to the caller as though he were an old friend. She listened, asked questions, empathized, and comforted. As she carefully listened to his experiences and hardship, she searched for bright spots in his life, which she quickly noted down, then shared those with him throughout the call - hanging on to whatever she could to keep him on the line and give him a sense of hope.

Midway through, she successfully disabled the caller\'s \"means\" and he agreed to speak with a therapist we referred him to, and to join a support group.

Fifteen minutes later, she referred the caller to an organization he could volunteer with.

I was confused ... volunteer?

But my mentor and the caller together decided that assisting others with a similar condition would help him cope with his own illness. The caller then thanked her for helping him and he agreed to call back the next day.

Then they both hung up.

My mentor looked at me with a half-smile and gave that \"whew!\" gesture as she wiped the back of her hand across her forehead, and returned to her book.

To her, this was \"just another call.\" To me, it was one of the greatest acts of love I had ever witnessed.

The caller was prepared to end his life - but through genuine love and compassion, not only did she convince him not to, but she motivated him to seek further help, and inspired him to volunteer, so he could give back to others.

How amazing!

I know in Sikhi we don\'t believe in \"angels\", but I do believe Waheguru imparts His will through His creation. It reminded me of a line in a Shabad I once learned:

agan saagar booddath sansaaraa, nanak baah pakker sathigur nisathaaraa

The world is drowning in the ocean of fire; O Nanak, holding me by the arm, the True Guru has saved me.

That night on the crisis hotline, I watched this metaphor come to life. And this whole experience made me reflect on \"seva.\"

In my understanding, seva, in the context of gurbani, has two necessary elements - complete selflessness and a connection with the Divine.

Although I\'ve done many acts of service, I often wondered if I\'ve ever done seva. Have I ever actually done something for someone else, where there was absolutely no haumai, no ego...no \"I?\"

Over the years, I\'ve organized several events and projects as a volunteer, but I do get stressed out and frustrated when things don\'t go as planned. So, is this still seva?

And even though I am cognizant of it, and make an effort to be \"selfless,\" sometimes my ego has a way of sneaking up on me. Some may say I\'m being too hard on myself and too idealistic.

But, there is no \"wrong way\" of doing Seva, right?

I agree that one should do as many acts of service as possible, regardless of the motivation - but I believe that seva, in the way the Guru describes it, is something more.

And it can be truly selfless.

When I read the story of Bhagat Puran Singh, I don\'t think he saw a distinction between Piara and himself. There was no \"I.\"

These ruminations on seva have changed the way I approach volunteering.

For one, I will henceforth try to choose the work that \"needs to be done,\" rather than the work that \"I want to do.\"

Secondly, I will seek volunteer opportunities in places and environments that are different for me, that will challenge me, and take me outside of my comfort zone.

As for experiencing truly \"selfless\" seva, this is where the other element comes in to play - simran. I believe that, through recitation and reflection on Akaal Purakh\'s Name, the barrier between myself and those I may help will dissolve. Through simran, acts of service, love and compassion will become part of my character and not something I consciously think about. The \"I\" will disappear.

But until I reach that stage - like anything else, I must practice.

Practice simran, so that it will inspire seva - and practice seva so that it will inspire simran.

I must take advantage of every opportunity for seva. Not only because it is my duty as a Sikh, not only for the good it may serve, but from what I can learn from the \"angels\" I meet along the way.

The Art of Tying a Turban

Wearing a Puggri (\"Puggh\") is nothing if it isn\'t an art form.

Everyday, millions of people get up earlier than everyone else to put on their puggh (not to mention groom their dhaaris - beards). For the past three hundred odd years, the puggri has adapted and changed to fit the style of the day as well as to meet many practical needs of Sardars.

For the young Sikh boy or girl considering what style they want to adopt, there are now a plethora of choices available.

Personally, I find the choice of which puggh-style to wear a very intimate and personal one.

Most Sikhs wear their puggh every day of their life and over time it becomes a part of them. Your friends, family and colleagues start to identify you with your puggh style and it becomes inextricably part of your personality; as much as your height, weight and looks.

To help those young Sikhs who are trying to figure out what is right for them or even for someone who has just lost their way, I have made a comprehensive list of puggri styles. Like anything else, the list is probably not complete; I\'m sure there is someone out there with a puggh style that the world hasn\'t seen yet.

We can\'t wait to see it either.

Enjoy:

Visor - Livin\' south of the equator? Can\'t stand the sun? Play a lot of golf?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may want to go with the Visor Puggh.

The Visor is usually a double puggh that is angled towards the ground to give you some shade. While not the most stylish choice, it provides a much needed service for those who need it.

Business - This is one of the most common puggh styles, especially among those in business or finance. Usually a single, the Business Puggh is small, fairly neat and simple. Good enough to make someone look respectable, but small enough not to draw too much attention to. It\'s usually just enough cloth to cover the joora (hair top-knot) and is generally black or navy blue.

Nihang - no description necessary.

Shark Fin - Another practical puggh, the Shark Fin can be identified by a sharp point at the top (think Empire State Building). For those living in rough areas, the \'Fin can double as a weapon. This style is not recommended for beginners.

Khalistani - We have all seen this one before. A Khanda in the middle, maybe some kirpans in the outlying regions, usually blue and orange or blue and yellow.

It can most aptly be characterized as a practical Nihang Pugh. Like the Nihang, this is more than just a puggh, it is a lifestyle choice.

Ear Muffs - This is the puggh that covers up the whole ear. While not a terribly popular style these days, some people find it oddly comfortable. It is, for obvious reasons, more popular in the wintertime.

Jatt - (meaning \"peasant,\" not a caste. Remember, we are Sikhs, not desis, for heaven\'s sake!). a.k.a. The Pleasant Peasant. Sometimes gets confused with the Visor Puggh, but it is its own style completely. For a while, it was the most common puggh and probably one of the original styles. It fell off in popularity during the nineties when teenagers were experimenting with \"The Pretty Boy,\" \"Business,\" and \"The Khalistani.\"

To the delight of many, the Jatt is making a strong comeback in recent years.

The Lasso, a.k.a. The Cowboy, a.k.a. The Quickie - Have you ever seen a cowboy lasso a calf and quickly tie it up? Imagine that, but the cow is your head and you are the cowboy. This puggh is one that is put together in under 30 seconds.

Starch - Mainly seen in the older crowd, this is another puggh of convenience. In the same way that we starch our shirts, people starch their pugghs. Over time, the starch sets in and it starts to form a hat-like structure.

The Two-Face - As I said earlier, tying a puggh is an art form, especially if you\'re intent on getting clean larhs (layers). Getting the right side to look nice can be particularly tricky. This leaves the lazy ones having one side neat and the other ... well, not so neat.

The Cover Up - The Cover Up was designed as a solution for those suffering from a Two-Face Puggh. The Cover Up is when you cover one side of your puggh with one huge sheet of a larh in order to avoid having one clean side and one messy side. This is a clever way to give the illusion of neatness.

The Pretty Boy - We all know this one. There is always that guy who spends every waking moment of his life in front of a mirror perfecting his puggh. Perfect shape, extremely neat, no lint and probably color-coordinated. In the time it takes for him to do his puggh, I have vacuumed the floors, done my taxes and solved the world hunger crisis.

Female Puggh - Not to be confused with a keski, the puggh that women most commonly wear is distinct. While it is the shape of a keski, it is usually thicker and neater and, in the case of \"American\" Sikhs, almost always white. Also, this puggh is most commonly used with women who have good bone structure.

Big Boi - Not to be confused with the Nihang Puggh, the Big Boi is a well tied puggh on par with The Pretty Boy, but double the size.

What can I say ... some people just think bigger is better. Let\'s just hope they\'re not over-compensating for something.

African Style - Not sure what the origins of this puggh are, but it is very distinct from the other styles above. The African Puggh starts by folding the puggh the same way you would fold a blanket (flat), as opposed to doing a traditional pooni (diagonal stretch). This gives a very slim, layered effect (think inverted professional bicycle helmet).

Joora Pugh, a.k.a. The Sunrise - Have you ever watched the sun rise? Well, imagine that the horizon is your puggh and your joora is the sun. With most people, you just see the horizon, but with this puggh you see the whole sun.

Keski - While the keski has gotten a bad (w)rap these days (google image search: political activist), it\'s actually quite a stylish puggh and does wonders for your ears. It\'s also great for sports and outdoor activities. When the tensions in the Middle East ease up a bit, I\'m sure we will see a re-emergence of the Keski.

The Bicky - Well, this isn\'t really a style per se, but more of a color choice. We\'re talking polka dots, stripes, various patterns and sometimes glitter. These aren\'t for the faint of heart, but they do make a statement. Named after the famous \"turban guy\" in Hollywood.
