MUMBAI: Senior Maharashtra cadre IPS officer S S Virk has alleged that Punjab\'s Akali Dal government had asked its intelligence personnel to
collection information about \"important smugglers and criminals with votebank\" to be used for election purposes.
In a letter to the chief election commissioner, Virk has attached a circular asking the state intelligence machinery to get information, among others, about smugglers and criminals who have votebank.
TOI has a copy of this intelligence circular. Virk told the commission that the Akali government, which had accused him of political bias and helping Congress as Punjab DGP, \"was misusing police machinery for political purposes\".
Following letters written by the Akali government, EC has asked the state to inform it of the status of cases filed against Virk.
