Sikh boy facing charges after allegedly threatening students with kirpan

A 13-year-old Sikh boy allegedly got in to a dispute with two fellow students at Cavalier-de-Lasalle high school two weeks ago and pulled his kirpan - a ceremonial dagger - and threatened them with it.

The teen was suspended and will appear in youth court to face charges stemming from the incident.

The debate over whether Sikh children should be allowed to bring the blunted dagger to school is not new in Quebec. In 2001, a case involving a Sikh boy from Lasalle went all the way to the Supreme Court as a Charter of Rights issue.

In that case, the court sided with the boy and his family
