2,500 stranded Indians allowed to return from Oman

DUBAI: In a special gesture, Oman has decided to allow 2,500 Indians, who were stranded there after expiry of visas, to return home without any penalty. The decision was conveyed by Oman\'s Inspector General of police and Customs Lt Gen Malik bin Suleiman al Maamari to Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed who is on a visit to the Arab country. The 2,500 Indians, who had gone to Oman on visit visa, were stranded for several months as they were unable to return home due to various reasons after their visas expired. The government of Oman also decided to waive the fine on their over stay, Ahamed said. The Omani government said those who do not avail this opportunity will not be given the second chance. The Omani official said there were allegations of some Indians indulging in illegal activities. Ahamed responded by saying that the Indian embassy in Muscat will cooperate with the government of Oman. After the green signal to 2,500 people, at least 3,000 more Indians are waiting clearance for returning. The issue will be discussed by Ahamed with Foreign Minister Yousuf bin Allawi and Omar bin Abdul Munin al Zawawi, Special Adviser to the King. Ahamed is on a two-day visit to Oman after which he will travel to Qatar for a day and UAE for two days.
