By Mansab Dogar

LAHORE: Following the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q)'s boycott announcement of the assembly proceedings, PML-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif is set to be elected unopposed as chief minister of Punjab.

Shahbaz became a member of the Punjab Assembly on Friday when he took oath of office after winning unopposed from PP-48 (Bhakkar).

According to the schedule announced by Assembly Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan during assembly proceedings on Saturday, the provincial assembly would elect the leader of the House in a special session on Sunday (today). Following the election, the newly elected chief minister would go to Governor's House to take oath of office. The Fourth Session of the Punjab Assembly in its current parliamentary year was prorogued, as the speaker said that the House could not conduct any business in the absence of a chief minister. Sardar Dost Muhammad Khosa resigned from the CM slot on Friday.

Punjab Assembly Secretary Maqsood Ahmad Malik, on the orders of the speaker, announced that the candidates aspiring for the CM slot could submit their nomination papers with the PA Secretariat by 9pm on Saturday, APP reported. He said the speaker would then start scrutiny of the filed papers at 9.15pm and announce the final list the same night. Malik said the candidates could withdraw their nomination papers anytime before the start of polling for the CM slot. The session, which started an hour behind schedule at 11am, was originally scheduled to conduct a general discussion on the law and order situation, as the day was specified for government business.
