SGPC president to be Chancellor of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World Sikh University

FATEHGARH SAHIB: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC) president will be ex-officio
Chancellor of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World Sikh University to be set up at Fatehgarh Sahib. In other universities of Punjab, Punjab Governor is Chancellor of the university but in case of Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, Vice President of India is Chancellor of PU.

It may be mentioned here that Sikh university project has been undertaken by Sri Guru Granth Sahib Fourth Centenary Memorial Trust, which is a constituted unit of SGPC. Former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur served as the first president of the trust in her ex-officio capacity but in this capacity Avtar Singh Makkar is presently president of the trust while other members are Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Gurpal Singh, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, Didar Singh Bhatti, Bhupinder Singh Anand, Prof. J.S. Bajaj, R.S. Mann, Punjab Advocate General H.S. Mattewal, former IAS Amarjit Singh Sidhu. Former Punjabi University, Patiala VC Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia was Member Secretary of the trust but now he has been appointed first VC of the Sikh University for the period of five years.

The Punjab Vidhan Sabha had passed Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Act, 2008, on April 16 this year. Under the Act, the SGPC would establish the proposed university in 84 acres land. When contacted SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar he confirmed that he is presently Chancellor of the university in his ex-officio capacity of the SGPC president. When asked about Ahluwalia appointment, he said that Ahluwalia was earlier Member Secretary of the trust and he was working with the project from long time in a very dedicated manner and completed all correspondence for setting up the university. He said that it is not possible to continue the Sikh university project without V-C now as signatures of V-C is required on various places but Member Secretary could not sign on those documents. He said after the appointment of V-C, now there is no need of Member Secretary post.

When asked about the procedure of Ahluwalia\'s appointment, who remained in various
controversies when he was V-C Punjabi University, Patiala, Makkar admitted that Ahluwalia\'s selection was not made after calling any panel. He said during recent meeting of the trust, the
trust members decided to appoint him V-C.
