Acid attack on two women

JALANDHAR: A mother-daughter duo became the victims of an acid attack in the Ladhewali area of the city on Monday afternoon. Preliminary reports suggest one person threw the acid on Harbhajan Kaur and Jasbir Kaur, but the women have not identified anybody.

Harbhajan Kaur, who is in her fifties, and her daughter Jasbir Kaur (27) had ventured out of their house to purchase vegetables when they were attacked.

While the older woman sustained injuries on the abdominal area, the acid also fell on Jasbir's face. As the women tried to wipe away the acid from their faces, they hurt their hands in the process.

They were rushed to a private hospital in Rama Mandi area. Attending doctor VS Johal said they had sustained 40-45 acid injuries.

The family originally hails from Amritsar and was living here in a rented accommodation.

Sadar Police Station SHO Sarabjit Rai said the victims stated there was only one person who threw the acid. Adding that they were investigating the case from various angles, he said Jasbir was a divorcee and her husband- who was facing a murder case-was out on bail these days. He said they had not named any suspect in the case.

However, area residents claimed three boys escaped on a motorcycle after throwing acid even as the women were still in a state of shock.
